Termite

Termites are one of the most destructive urban pests in Malaysia, causing significant economic losses due to structural damage. According to a study by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), the annual damage cost of termite infestation in Malaysia was estimated at about RM 40 million and this figure does not include the cost of prevention, inspection, and treatment, which could add up to another RM 100 million per year. Therefore, it is crucial to implement effective and preventive management strategies to reduce the impact of this pest on the urban environment.

Termite Behaviour

Termites are highly organized and cooperative insects that exhibit complex behaviours. Some of these behaviours are:

  • Feeding: Termites feed mainly on cellulose, which is a component of plant cell walls. Cellulose is a difficult substance to digest, so termites rely on symbiotic microorganisms in their gut to break it down. Termites also feed on other organic materials, such as humus, fungi, lichens and animal dung.
  • Building: Termites construct elaborate nests or mounds using soil, saliva, feces, and wood particles. The nests provide shelter, protection, and optimal conditions for the colony. The nests can vary in size, shape, and location depending on the termite species and environment.
  • Communication: Termites communicate with each other using chemical signals (pheromones), physical contact (tactile), and vibrations (acoustic). Pheromones are used to mark trails, attract mates, coordinate activities, and regulate caste differentiation. Tactile communication involves antennal contact, grooming, and trophallaxis (exchange of food and fluids). Acoustic communication involves tapping or head-banging to warn or alarm other termites.
  • Swarming: Swarming is the process of dispersal and reproduction of termites. It occurs when environmental conditions are favourable, such as temperature, humidity, and wind. The alate or swarmer leave their original colony in large numbers and fly to find suitable locations to start new colonies. They shed their wings after landing and pair up with mates of the same species. They then dig a chamber in the soil or wood where they mate and lay eggs.

Termite Control

Different strategies and methods are used depending on the type of termite, the extent of the infestation, and the affected premise/environmental conditions:

Exterminex Termite Baiting System

Exterminex™ is one of the most attractive termite baits available. A natural form matrix containing highly refined most preferred physical form of alpha cellulose base that is fortified with alluring compounds and feeding stimulants.

Liquid Termiticide Treatment

This involves applying a liquid termiticide to the soil around and under the infested structure. The termiticide creates a protection barrier that prevents termites from accessing your premise.
